Ethical decision-making is an integral part of a VR professional’s practice. Daily, we are faced with ethical dilemmas that require thoughtful reflection and critical thinking. An ethical dilemma is a choice between two actions based on conflicting professional values; both may be morally correct and professionally grounded. Both may be right or good. It is this ambiguity that creates the dilemma for the VR professional.
To support a client centred approach to providing care and services, the VR Profession must understand their role and function in providing fair and equitable services regardless of ethnicity or race, physical or mental ability, and diversity.
As VR Professionals we are committed to respecting our clients right to self-determination and their rights to make choices regarding the services they may receive or choose not to receive. The VR Professional will assist Clients to make care plans and life choices in keeping with the Client’s values, beliefs, and Vocational goals within the VRA’s Professional’s vision, mission, and values. Clients, if capable, have the right to live at risk if their choices do not pose imminent harm to others, including their caregivers and health care providers.
